ABF Global | Executive Search for Alternative Credit
Trusted Executive Search Partner For Over 30 years
Fund finance has grown from a niche lending product into a strategic piece of the private fund industry. The market includes subscription (capital call) facilities, NAV loans, hybrid facilities, GP financings, management fee lines, and collateralised fund obligations (CFOs). For years this was a commercial-bank business. Now institutional capital — insurance companies, private credit funds, alternative asset managers — is driving a lot of the growth (Cadwalader/Dechert, Global Legal Insights: Fund Finance 2026).
The product has been remarkably durable. It’s a two-decade-old market with essentially one major default of note — the 2018 Abraaj collapse — which tested the structures and prompted a wave of best-practice work across the industry. JPMorgan’s fund finance team calls it “stability in volatility” — a countercyclical product that came through the pandemic, the rate spike, and the 2023 regional bank stress without meaningful losses (JPMorgan, via GLI Fund Finance 2026).
We run a dedicated fund finance practice inside our broader alternative credit search platform. The work is technical, the market is small, and it’s tightly networked. Searches also touch multiple jurisdictions — Cayman, Luxembourg, Ireland, BVI, Bermuda — so candidates with cross-border experience are at a premium.
We place senior people who provide credit to private investment funds and their general partners. The collateral isn’t a company’s operations. It’s the fund itself — uncalled LP commitments (for subscription facilities), the net asset value of the portfolio (for NAV facilities), management fee streams, or GP equity. Insurance demand is a major driver right now: rated CFO debt and rated-note feeder structures offer better regulatory capital treatment than holding fund interests directly (Dechert, 2026). That’s a big reason CFOs have taken off.
Adjacent products that share talent — private credit, asset-based finance, secondaries — are also within our coverage.
We also work with the offshore professional services layer — Cayman, Luxembourg, Irish, and BVI administrators and directors.
We know the product. Subscription documentation, NAV borrowing bases, fund-level preferred equity, CFO structural tranches, rated-note mechanics, offshore jurisdictional work — it’s a specialty.
Deep relationships. Banks, alternative lenders, insurers, and sponsors, developed over three decades.
Cross-product context. Fund finance overlaps with private credit, ABF, and structured credit. Our coverage across those verticals informs every search.
Pace. Fund finance hiring windows are short, especially around desk build-outs and new product launches.
What’s the difference between subscription facilities and NAV facilities? Subscription facilities are revolving lines secured by uncalled LP capital — the fund borrows against its ability to call capital. NAV facilities are term loans secured by the NAV of the fund’s portfolio — the fund borrows against what it already owns. Subscription is short-duration, used to bridge capital calls. NAV is longer-duration, used for portfolio management, distributions, or add-on investments.
Why is fund finance growing? Two reasons. First, sponsors have been looking for liquidity alternatives as the secondaries market stays inefficient and M&A has slowed — GPs are holding assets longer, and fund finance helps bridge that (Dechert, 2026). Second, alternative capital — insurance companies drawn by CFO capital treatment, private credit funds chasing yield — has come in to supplement the traditional bank lenders. The 2023 regional bank crisis pushed sponsors to diversify their lender relationships.
What sub-segments are hiring most right now? As of early 2026, NAV facilities, CFOs, GP financings, and continuation fund financing are the busiest. CFOs in particular are growing fast because they give insurance investors better regulatory capital treatment than direct fund exposure.
How do you source candidates? Relationships, not databases. Fund finance is a small community. Senior professionals get reached through direct engagement.
Whether you’re launching a new fund finance platform, adding a senior originator, building a CFO structuring team, or staffing a NAV facility desk, we can help.
